Better Health for the Delta
The primary objective of the Better Health for the Delta (BHD) program is to improve access to basic health services for rural residents, using community health networks.
The Delta Project is federally administered by United States Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Office of Rural Health Policy. In Louisiana, the Program is administered by the Southeast Louisiana Area Health Education Center (SELAHEC). For the purpose of this grant, HRSA designated 29 eligible parishes in Louisiana, and only one grantee can be awarded funding per parish.
The Center for Community Capacity has been working with the Better Health for the Delta program since 2002, providing training and consultation to their staff and grantees around network development and sustainability.
The Harrison Institute
The Harrison Institute, a program at the Georgetown University Law Center, provides legal services. Since 1972, the Institute's clinical program has represented citizen coalitions, housing cooperatives, community development corporations, government agencies, state and local legislatures and nonprofit organizations. Several components of the Institute work together to achieve the Institute's mission.
The Harrison Institute, with the University of Southern Mississippi, is a co-founder of the Center for Sustainable Health Outreach (CSHO), which provides support and technical assistance to community health workers (CHWs) and CWH programs.
The Center for Community Capacity has worked closely with the Harrison Institute since 2002 to develop several capacity-building trainings for community-based partnerships and organizations. In addition, the Harrison Institute has assisted the CCC in the training of the Better Health for the Delta Staff as well as their grantees.
The Rapides Foundation
The Rapides Foundation provides grants throughout a nine parish service area that share the Foundation's mission to improve the health and well-being of Central Louisiana.
The mission of The Rapides Foundation is to improve community health and brighten the future through building capacity to resolve local challenges in The Rapides Foundation Service Area. Established in 1994 as the result of a joint venture between Rapides Regional Medical Center and Columbia/HCA, The Rapides Foundation became the largest endowed charitable foundation in Louisiana.
The Center for Community Capacity received a grant from the Rapides Foundation for an 18 month pilot project in Avoyelles parish in 2004. Capacity-building activities such as training, technical assistance and skills development are incorporated throughout the program. The project is an intergenerational mentorship program between at-risk teenagers and senior citizens.
The Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living
History & Mission
The Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living (TFL) is funded by HB 157, Act #19 of the 2002 Session of the Legislature. This bill secured a 12 cent per pack increase on cigarettes, with two cents dedicated for a statewide tobacco prevention and cessation program. The cessation component of the program is administered by the Louisiana State University Health Science Center and is being implemented in the State Hospital System. The prevention component is being administered by the Louisiana Public Health Institute, and includes major activities such as Statewide Coordination and Community Programs, a Media Campaign, Program Coordination and Program Evaluation.
TFL has established regional centers in each of the nine Office of Public Health regions. A full time regional coordinator is housed in each office and will focus on providing training, technical assistance and tobacco activity coordination in his/her geographic area.
The Center for Community Capacity has been contracted by TFL to conduct several core capacity-building activities for the program. The CCC has successfully incorporated tobacco-related issues into our ongoing activities such as the statewide Community Inventory and creation of a Community Resource Center, as well as to provide training and technical assistance to TFL staff and regional coordinators.
